Chapter Eight

~Fox~

Why was it so natural to be touching Harper? Any time she was within reach, I had to hold her hand, hug her, kiss her head, something. We’d just met, but she already felt like an extension of me.

Which was why I was getting frustrated by all of the people intent on separating us at the party. Kate’s family wanted to catch up with her and kept pulling her aside. And business acquaintances or old friends would catch me and pull me into their conversations. It was driving me crazy.

Several times I’d considered just dragging her back to the hotel so I could finally be alone with her again. Besides the fact that one on one time with her had quickly become my favorite thing in the world, I was worried with all of these people around she was going to learn the truth about me.

I wasn’t ashamed, far from it. I had already decided that my mission in life was now to marry Harper and give her the entire world. I was proud that I was able to do that for her. I was, however, worried that she’d be wicked pissed at me for not confessing sooner.

And she wouldn’t be wrong. It was a deception, a lie, and I was the perpetrator. But there hadn’t been time. Okay, that was a lie, too. I just didn’t want to ruin our weekend. I just got her, I wasn’t ready to risk losing her over something so stupid as how much money I have.

Tonight, when we got back to the hotel, I’d tell her everything. We just had to get through the next couple hours.

Extricating myself from an extremely boring conversation about capital gains laws, I made my way through the room and dropped into a seat next to Harper.

“You don’t look like Sally Horowitz,” she said, picking up the place card from the plate in front of me.

I took it from her and tossed it onto the table behind us. Sally could find a new seat.

“Can we get out of here yet?” I asked, leaning forward to kiss Harper’s neck. “I’m bored.”

“It’s our friend’s rehearsal dinner,” she chastised me. “No, we can’t leave.”

“We’d have a lot more fun back at the hotel,” I promised.

“I’m sure we would.” She giggled. “But I’m hungry and I don’t turn down free prime rib.”

Fair enough. I usually didn’t either. Looking around I realized that we were relatively alone at the moment. Everyone was still mingling by the bar or out in the lobby. No time like the present.

“Hey, Harper, I need to tell you something,” I said, taking her hand in mine.

“Okay.” She shifted in her seat, turning so that one of her legs pressed between mine. “What’s up?”

Someone started clinking their knife on a glass, and moments later the room exploded in tinkling, demanding the couple kiss for our entertainment. Damn it.

After the cheers and wolf whistles died down, people started to take their seats and we were suddenly surrounded by people. Double damn.
